Enquire about this pieceEnquire by emailThe story
Only Mpofu paints women carrying vessels on their heads around this tapered pot, giving an everyday object a scene of its own. Patterned dresses in yellow and burgundy stand out against the off-white surface. A green leafy stem adds a quieter line between the figures, letting the painting move around the vessel with space to breathe.
The photographed sides offer different views of the composition: a figure centred beneath the rim, a leafy stem alongside a head-wrapped woman, and another arrangement of the painted people. These details belong to the original hand-painted piece. The surface keeps its texture and brush marks, making the artwork feel present when seen up close.
A dark upper band carries ochre and burgundy triangles, with a line of small black dots beneath it. A smaller patterned border follows the foot. Together, these geometric details frame the figures without overwhelming them. The broad opening, grey rim and gradual taper keep the vessel’s original form visible from top to bottom.
Place it near a wall in a furnished entrance, living room, lodge or restaurant welcome area. A clear outline allows the figures and patterned borders to be appreciated while keeping the middle of the room open.
